Why drawing every day is a superpower
During my past year in art school, I've been exploring my creativity in many different ways, trying out new materials and techniques. However, one thing I haven't been doing consistently is sketchbooking. Sure, I've filled a page here and there, but there's something truly magical about using your sketchbook habitually, preferably every day.
Whether you're a seasoned sketcher or someone who just found an old pencil in the back of a drawer, I want to encourage you to explore the benefits of keeping a sketchbook and invite you to learn why drawing every day can be one of the most rewarding habits you'll ever cultivate.
Ignite your creativity
Think of your sketchbook as a playground for your imagination. Each blank page is an invitation to let your mind wander and explore new ideas. I read somewhere that a sketchbook can be a place for unicorns to have coffee with aliens. Though that hasn't occurred in my sketchbook yet (and I highly doubt it ever will...), I've discovered that I love drawing fish and horses. That may not sound strange, but I'm kind of scared of real horses and I've never been interested in fishing or keeping an aquarium.
By drawing every day, you'll tap into creativity you never knew existed. The more you draw, the more your imagination expands. Creativity is like a muscle that needs exercise, but in a way more fun than going to the gym ;-D
Relax and unwind
There's something incredibly soothing about putting pencil to paper. Drawing can be a wonderful way to de-stress after a long day. It can be like pressing the mute button on your worries and turning up the volume on your happy thoughts, or NO thoughts. It's a form of mindfulness that allows you to focus on the present moment and find peace in the simple act of creating.
Sharpen your skills
A sketchbook is the perfect place to boost your artistic abilities. Daily drawing helps improve your hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and the way you see shape. You'll see your progress over time, and flipping through old sketchbooks is like looking at a growing collection of masterpieces. Well, some of them at least ;-)
Whenever I've done drawing challenges before, it's been rewarding in so many ways and I've definitely seen my skills improve a lot! The consistency really is key, however worn out that phrase may be.
Connect with yourself and boost your mood
Your sketchbook is a safe space where you can be completely yourself. It's a place to explore your thoughts and ideas without judgment. Through drawing, you can make self-discoveries that lead to greater self-awareness and a deeper connection to your unique personality. Drawing has a way of bringing joy into your life. If you've ever experienced creating in a flow state, you know what I'm talking about. Plus, the sense of accomplishment you feel after completing a drawing can give you a wonderful boost of confidence and happiness.
Connect with others for more inspiration
Sharing your sketches can be a fantastic way to connect with others. Posting your daily drawings on social media is one way to do that. Finding a community of other artists is so important, and it's helped me countless times. Plus, you can get feedback and inspiration that keep your creativity flowing.
And one more thing, your art can brighten someone’s day and spark their creativity. You never know who might be encouraged to pick up a pencil and start their own sketchbook adventure because of you.
Conclusion
So, grab your sketchbook and draw what makes you happy! It doesn't have to be anything more or less than that. If the drawing didn't come out the way you wanted, all you need to do is turn the page!
Now go along and draw every day like it's the most important item on your to-do list - because, let’s be honest, it is!
